Vietnam Web Scene on OpenWeb Asia

A network of A-list bloggers in Asia covering web business in English had announced a Workgroup called OpenWeb.Asia. Details on the Workgroup can be found on Gang Lu's Mobinode, who initiated the network. ReadWriteWeb covered the action too. OpenWeb Asia 08 - the first pan-Asia conference will be announced soon. The Vietnamese Web 2.0 Startups blog is an active member in the Group and we hope to see more members to contribute to the development of Web business in Vietnam and Asia.

Vietnamese Web on Web Trend Map 2008

Last year I wished some Vietnamese web services to be listed in the Web Trend Map 2008 and this year when Information Architects released the beta version of Web Trend Map 2008 I found a Vietnamese stop: 24h.com.vn, a news site in the same line with Korean ones. The map is for fun only, however I should find out how Information Architects picked 24h and not others. It seems that they did not understand the web scene in Vietnam. A Year Look Back and Predictions for 2008

It is nearly one year since I started blogging on new media scene in Vietnam. Looking back early 2007 Web 2.0 is the buzzword known to few local Internet entrepreneurs but now it is a hot word among Vietnamese business people and investors. Motivated by successful IPO of China's Internet firms and high price tag of M&A deals and valuation of new media biz, local technology companies and young teams are rushing to the Internet goldmine hoping to get a foothold early on. Almost all of Web 2.0 models around the world are being cloned in Vietnam from YouTube, MySpace, Facebook, LinkedIn to Digg, Netvibes, Twitter. A formula of success is that some models work in China could work in Vietnam. By the end of year 2007 I still did not see a big hit among those startups. Perhaps there is no momentum for them to get to fast track: lack of seasoned management, hard to monetize with high traffic sites. Most chase consumer entertainment services and few startups target enterprise apps SaaS and click and mortar hybrid that have more sustainable revenue model.

My predictions for 2008:
Social Media:
  • Many new startups will be launched until mid year then some quit of exhausting.
  • Some large tech companies such as FPT, CMC will opt for acquisition instead of in-house development.
  • Self hosted Wordpress based blogs are increasing popular.
  • Active Yahoo360 accounts will drop 50%

Search Service:
  • No local player can challenge the Google' dominant position.

Online Gaming:
  • WOW will be exploring the market through Asian affiliate.
  • Audition Online is still the top casual MMO

Mobile:
  • iPhone would be the top choice of wish list among local professionals and Vietnam would be the largest market of iPhone in Southeast Asia with sales of 200K to 250K of units end of the year 2008.
  • No one remembers DVB-H ever in existence
  • Wimax is still in testing and not a commodity until yearend

Investment:
  • Some international VC firms will enter Vietnam market in addition to incumbent IDGVV, DFJ Vina.
  • Local VC and angels network will be formed to get a piece of the pie.

Can FPT 2.0 Boost Its Share Price?

At the Investors Conference held in HCMC recently, Vietnam’s largest ICT corporation FPT presented FPT 2.0 Transformation. Based on Web 2.0 and Flat World buzzwords, FPT is trying to convince investors that its core competency is still IT services after diversifying into real estate, financial and banking services. So what is FPT 2.0? It is a flat organization with customer centric, and 22,000 employees in 2010. How FPT can manage such a large number of employees while even Google had a difficult task of keeping 12,000 employees as flat organization. Following new web business trends is popular among top ICT corporations including Microsoft, Cisco, IBM, Nokia. However FPT lacks talents to put its transforming plan into action. In response to FPT grand plan, FPT share price tumbled more than 10%. In order to get back investor confidence, FPT can take some actions:
  • Join IBM and Wipro to have presence in Second Life. It would be the first Vietnamese company to open a virtual innovation center along with international IT giants.
  • FPT Capital, its investment arm, should act as corporate VC division to invest into young innovative companies in Vietnam and abroad (after the model of Intel Capital, Siemens Venture Capital, Legend Capital...)

Philip Kotler Talks Marketing 2.0 in Vietnam

Legendary marketing guru Philip Kotler was giving speech at "New marketing for the new age” workshop in HCM City August 17, 2007. More than 700 participants paid 320$ to see the marketing idol talking basic marketing concepts, many still need translation support since they could not understand native English. No one there asked Kotler why iPhone is a phenomenon in new marketing and PR. Why Kotler did not mention Web 2.0 as power tools of new marketing or marketing 2.0. Perhaps the audience is too far from marketing 2.0 tools or Kotler is writing marketing 2.0 in stealth mode. To discuss marketing 2.0 it is better to hold unconference rather than traditional workshop. Any upcoming unconference or Barcamp in Vietnam?

Web Trend Map 2007

A useful map for startups and VCs by Information Architects. A sort of subway map with some routes from Asia: China, Japan and Korea, almost no India strangely. Hope to see some Vietnamese stops in the Map 2008. Click for larger version.

Build a Web 2.0 Site for $12,000

Guy Kawasaki confessed his cost of starting Truemors is $12,107.09. In Vietnam you can start the equivalent with a fraction of the cost, however it is harder to get free PR since Guy is the Valley's celebrity. Who could launch a Web 2.0 Site for less than $1,000?
