Should Shareholders Love FPT's CEO Spending Time Blogging?

I just came across a newly setup blog of Truong Gia Binh, CEO of FPT. The blog is being run on a bad platform without RSS, trackback features. It seems that Binh did not have strategy and positioning for his blog. He is trying to communicate that he is still young in mind to lead FPT into a new era. But as the CEO of the largest ICT company listed on Vietnam Stock Market he should be careful since blogging is high risk for CEO. Almost top CEOs in the world avoid blogging as it is not easy to control the outcome and time consuming to answer so many comments (some unfavour comments could make them unhappy). A successful CEO blogger is Jonathan Schwartz of Sun Microsystems, his blog was planned in detail before making public. With clear strategy he could add value to the communication with staff, shareholders, clients, developers. In my post on FPT 2.0 I did not mention CEO blogging for risky reason, but if FPT management wants to join blogosphere they should create a position of CBO (chief blogging officer) or C20 (chief two point oh officer) to manage blogging and social media communication. However you, as the shareholders of FPT want to see them spending time chatting online?

Why Da Lat could not be a Silicon Valley Clone

A romantic tourist destination in the Western Highlands of Vietnam dubbed City of Love, Da Lat targets to be a sort of Silicon Valley clone in Vietnam in the next decade. Some attributes being promoted by local authority: nice weather around the year, good telecom and networking infrastructure, supporting local authority agencies, local human resource development through intensive education and training. Those conditions are just OK for event entertainment business but far from Silicon Valley clone business environment. There is no top local university in Da Lat, VC investment is a new concept in Vietnam, no VC tax incentive policy yet, lacks of entrepreneurial spirit. Young local talents either choose Hanoi or HCM City for career destination rather than Da Lat. Young entrepreneurs and startup teams tend to find like minded guys that mainly located in Hanoi and HCM City. It is a mission impossible to drive those guys away from those two centers except some top technocrats lead the way. (A reference from India's Nano City raised by Sabeer Bhatia, co-founder of Hotmail). However the folk at Silicon Valley still see the hard road for other places to replicate even the Seattle where Microsoft, Amazon head quartered at.

How YouTube Clone Make Money

The first Vietnamese YouTube clone Clip.vn reached good traffics after more than six months in operation. Its development pattern is similar to other YouTube clones worldwide: born out of YouTube model, viral marketing, word of mouse, get VCs' money and burn a lot to keep users visiting. What is next step? On a lucky day a giant come asking to buy your business with 10X - 30X of investment. But can you wait the deal while you will run out of money of the first round of investment very soon. Any VC dares to invest next round into money burner without clear revenue model. I am surprised that Clip.vn had spent a lot on banner advertising, affiliations. The top priority now is to build revenue model. Where to clone now, it is not from the Valley but China. K6 and Tudou have their own advertising systems inserting ads into uploaded videos and sharing revenue with video producers. In addition, you can find creative ways using contextual advertising tools. Show your investors that you can make money.

Vietnam Standout in Southeast Asia

In a talk with my VC friend in Hong Kong, he said Vietnam is behind China 10 years and Malaysia 5 years in web business. He could be right at economic development only, but in web scene I can say Vietnam is only 2 years behind China and 2 year beyond Malaysia. In my earlier post, Vietnam is on par with Singapore and greater potential. Internet users in Vietnam now is larger than Malaysia's. MMORPGs are widespread in Vietnam similar to China scene: Swordsman Online and Audition attract millions of players. Global VC firms IDGV and DFJ came to Vietnam as the only destination in Southeast Asia. After long sleeping, Vietnam stock market is taking off and is the top emerging market along with China. Vietnam would be on the forefront of Southeast Asia again.

WriteMaps - Nice Sitemap Tool

I came across a very interesting visual sitemap webapp, WriteMaps uses web standards-based HTML and CSS, unlike many other diagram webapps using flash. WriteMaps provides great user experience: nice clean layout, ease of use and so fast. But I wonder whom they target, few webmasters would pick it. Good tech product but weak vision unless they plan to use the tech for next cool things

Vietnam is ready for Web 2.0?

Reading recently James Seng’s post about Web 2.0 in Singapore and Spannerworks Web 2.0 taking off in China, I think it is time for Vietnam to start Web 2.0 services. Here are the reasons.
1) Vietnam is a large market.
Population of more than 85 millions (about one third from 15 to 30 years old) and nearly 15 millions internet users. Some Vietnamese websites reach high rank with Alexa. Online games are so popu lar with Vietnamese youngsters. Vietnam could become the n ext China or India.
2) Available funding for Web 2.0
IDG Ventures Vietnam is willing to invest into Web 2.0 start-ups with big portion of $100 million fund. FPT Capital is looking for partners who can manage portfolio of Web 2.0 services. Other VC funds are setting up to grasp this potential market.
3) HR 2.0
There are not many Web 2.0 visionaries in Vietnam like in other countries but the pool of web developing talents is available enough for Web 2.0 services. Some young designers can work with leading Hollywood studios.
