Can eBay Pull Chodientu up?

BusinessWeek just posted an article on partnership between eBay and Vietnamese clone Chodientu. Although eBay is a global powerhouse but no successful track record in Asia. C2C E-commerce in Vietnam should have a long way to go since online payment and security are big obstacles. The article mentioned IDG and Softbank as investors of Chodientu.vn, that made local media interpreting "leading mobile operator" in Japan (Softbank) as partner of Chodientu.vn. In fact, the VC firms that put money into Chodientu are IDG Ventures Vietnam and presumably Softbank India and China Holding. In Vietnam Chodientu.vn had associated with two infamous actions: site cracking by former technical guy (team chemistry problem) and CPC ad widget calculation with publishers. It is easy to understand a global player like eBay need a local partner to enter the market but as a local player you should focus on building customer base, community, user experience rather than putting partnership with VC and international partner as top priority.

Sex and Violence to Draw Traffic to the Website of the Vietnam Study Promotion Society

Dantri.com.vn is one of the top 4 news portals in Vietnam with sensational news coverage style. Celebrity gossip and trivia could draw attention of teens and office workers quickly. A recent article in automotive section could scare old generation people with some high rated violent photos that you can see in horror films. A Vietnamese version of Pamela Anderson played the key role attacking the patient that parents should tell their kids to stay away from those kinds of websites. Ironically the website is belong to the Vietnam Study Promotion Society (newspapers and magazines must be managed under State owned agencies or Government licensed associations/societies). Actually the website is run by a VC backed company trying to drive readers to its new portal. Using tabloid tactics could be a good choice for digital content companies but much abuse could destroy their image fast.

IDG Ventures Rebranding, More Money to Vietnam

After IDG Ventures Boston broke off from its affiliation with IDG Ventures network and rebranded to Flybridge Capital Partners, IDG Chairman Pat McGovern decided to restructure the global VC network with central unit based in Boston. Former Managing Partner of Prevail Capital Steve Kahn will lead this newly created IDG Capital with main work of raising money for funds in Vietnam, India and Korea.
Quote from VentureWire:

IDG is typically the sole backer of its venture affiliates’ first funds. If the fund generates suitable returns to warrant a successor fund, IDG’s strategy is to open up that second fund to limited partners, while committing 10% to 25% of the capital.

The company set up a $100 million fund in Vietnam in 2004, a $150 million India fund in 2006, and a $100 million Korea fund late last year…McGovern expects IDG to establish its first fund in Eastern Europe this fall, with $150 million and an office in Warsaw; a second early-stage Vietnam fund next year with about $200 million; a second India fund with $350 million in 2010; a growth fund in Vietnam with $350 million in 2010; and a similar-sized growth fund in Korea in 2010 or 2011.

Why Da Lat could not be a Silicon Valley Clone

A romantic tourist destination in the Western Highlands of Vietnam dubbed City of Love, Da Lat targets to be a sort of Silicon Valley clone in Vietnam in the next decade. Some attributes being promoted by local authority: nice weather around the year, good telecom and networking infrastructure, supporting local authority agencies, local human resource development through intensive education and training. Those conditions are just OK for event entertainment business but far from Silicon Valley clone business environment. There is no top local university in Da Lat, VC investment is a new concept in Vietnam, no VC tax incentive policy yet, lacks of entrepreneurial spirit. Young local talents either choose Hanoi or HCM City for career destination rather than Da Lat. Young entrepreneurs and startup teams tend to find like minded guys that mainly located in Hanoi and HCM City. It is a mission impossible to drive those guys away from those two centers except some top technocrats lead the way. (A reference from India's Nano City raised by Sabeer Bhatia, co-founder of Hotmail). However the folk at Silicon Valley still see the hard road for other places to replicate even the Seattle where Microsoft, Amazon head quartered at.

Can FPT 2.0 Boost Its Share Price?

At the Investors Conference held in HCMC recently, Vietnam’s largest ICT corporation FPT presented FPT 2.0 Transformation. Based on Web 2.0 and Flat World buzzwords, FPT is trying to convince investors that its core competency is still IT services after diversifying into real estate, financial and banking services. So what is FPT 2.0? It is a flat organization with customer centric, and 22,000 employees in 2010. How FPT can manage such a large number of employees while even Google had a difficult task of keeping 12,000 employees as flat organization. Following new web business trends is popular among top ICT corporations including Microsoft, Cisco, IBM, Nokia. However FPT lacks talents to put its transforming plan into action. In response to FPT grand plan, FPT share price tumbled more than 10%. In order to get back investor confidence, FPT can take some actions:

Join IBM and Wipro to have presence in Second Life. It would be the first Vietnamese company to open a virtual innovation center along with international IT giants.
FPT Capital, its investment arm, should act as corporate VC division to invest into young innovative companies in Vietnam and abroad (after the model of Intel Capital, Siemens Venture Capital, Legend Capital...)

IDGVV Brings More Money to Vietnam

IDGVV annou nced today its investment into two companies: Vega Software which runs the video sharing site Clip.vn and Goldsun Focus Media, a division of Goldsun Advertising, would clone the successful China's Focus Media. Actually IDG Ventures China has Focus Media in its China portfolio and Vietnam side could learn from the Chinese partner. IDGVV' LP chairman Patrick McGovern said a second fund of $350 millions should be launched this year and could total up to $650 millions till the year 2010 including current $100 millions fund. It seems that now IDGVV is the dominant player in the technology VC investment in Vietnam since DFJ Vinacapital was left far behind. It is a good opportunity for international VC firms such as Benchmark Capital, Softbank to enter the market being seen the next China.

Vietnam Standout in Southeast Asia

In a talk with my VC friend in Hong Kong, he said Vietnam is behind China 10 years and Malaysia 5 years in web business. He could be right at economic development only, but in web scene I can say Vietnam is only 2 years behind China and 2 year beyond Malaysia. In my earlier post, Vietnam is on par with Singapore and greater potential. Internet users in Vietnam now is larger than Malaysia's. MMORPGs are widespread in Vietnam similar to China scene: Swordsman Online and Audition attract millions of players. Global VC firms IDGV and DFJ came to Vietnam as the only destination in Southeast Asia. After long sleeping, Vietnam stock market is taking off and is the top emerging market along with China. Vietnam would be on the forefront of Southeast Asia again.
