Which Scenario for DVB-H in Vietnam?
Nearly one year
back when Nokia annou
nced its first DVB-H service in Asia with
Vietnam's VTC, it
seems that Nokia had failed to get user adoption. At launch some telecom
experts made grand prediction of 300K of DVB-H users by the end of year
2007 in Vietnam. Early this year, VTC's forecast was more modest with
80K of subscribers. However by end of September 2007 the figure was
about 5,000 users. Many Asian countries now have a reason not to launch
commercial DVB-H service early and take wait and see option. While Nokia
is busy fighting fast expansion of hot iPhone in Europe and soon to
Asia, testing mobile social networking service Mosh, how local DVB-H operator manage
its marketing strategy. Some options:
- Lower price handsets: if someone like to watch mobile TV, he could buy a handset capable of receiving analogue TV channels with $200 price tag (Nokia one is about $700).
- Just maintain the service and wait the next signal from Nokia
- Stop the service and prepare for next solutions: 3G, 4G, Wimax

How Big Guy Check Local Partners?
I just came across a NOKIA press release on
DVB-H mobile TV service launch in Vietnam. I was taken
aback by this:”Vietnam Television Technology Investment
and Development Company (VTC) is the leading and sole state-owned
enterprise under
Vietnam Television”. Actually VTC had been brought to Ministry of Post and Telematics since early 2005.
Competition between Vietnam Television and VTC was heating up in World Cup 2006 summer. How Nokia manage its
communications?
