Social Networking Services for Vietnamese Women
One day after
Yahoo announced its Shine portal
for women, in Vietnam the web 2.0 startup Vinalive also stirs the social networking competition with its PhunuNet targeting dynamic
Vietnamese women. It seems that PhunuNet is following the simple but
successful model of iVillage.
While social networking sites are in a fierce competition seeking users and monetization with such names as Tamtay, Yobanbe, Cyworld, Zoomban etc., targeting women segment is a smart way to differentiate. PhunuNet offers useful content for women’s interests, including Love & Sex, Fashion & Beauty, Health, Lifestyle, Career & Work, Entertainment & Celebrities, Travel, Cooking, Pregnancy & Babycare, Brides, Horoscope etc. It also offers social Q&A, video sharing, groups, events and blogging tools. Not just an iVillage clone, PhunuNet has good localization approach tailored to the taste of Vietnamese women. In fact PhunuNet currently looks like a content portal rather than a web 2.0 services. PhunuNet will have to improve a lot to be a good web 2.0 product rather than a women portal like it is now.
Vietnamese startups should not overlook the women segment in Vietnam, which may total 50% of Vietnamese Internet population of 20 millions. Women-oriented media channels account for the lion’s share of Vietnamese advertising expenses on TV and magazines. VCs are also rushing to women oriented websites in the United States. NBC Universal acquired iVillage, the most popular women’s site along with its other Internet properties for $600 million in 2006.Glam Media, the number one women’s property on the Net as per the latest comScore ranking raised $18.5 million in Series C funding from Duff Ackerman & Goodrich Ventures (DAG), Accel Partners, Draper Fisher Jurvetson, WaldenVC, and Information Capital (Chairman & CEO Samir Arora’s fund). Glam Media had also raised $10 million in Series B led by Accel Partners with Draper Fisher Jurvetson and WaldenVC in 2004.
The question now is can VCs in Vietnam see the value of this potential segment?

How YouTube Clone Make Money
The first Vietnamese YouTube clone Clip.vn reached good traffics after more
than six months in operation. Its development pattern is similar to
other YouTube clones worldwide: born out of YouTube model, viral
marketing, word of mouse, get VCs' money and burn a lot to keep users
visiting. What is next step? On a lucky day a giant come asking to buy
your business with 10X - 30X of investment. But can you wait the deal
while you will run out of money of the first round of investment very
soon. Any VC dares to invest next round into money burner without clear
revenue model. I am surprised that Clip.vn had spent a lot on banner
advertising, affiliations. The top priority now is to build revenue
model. Where to clone now, it is not from the Valley but China. K6 and Tudou have their own
advertising systems inserting ads into uploaded videos and sharing
revenue with video producers. In addition, you can find creative ways
using contextual advertising tools. Show your investors that you can
make money.

Google Launches StartPage Service in Vietnam?
Personalised
StartPage Services are popular among frequent web users with My Yahoo,
Netvibes and Pageflakes are top choices. Search
giant Google launched its owned StartPage iGoogle but seems not meet its
expectation. A service in Vietnam named iGoogle.vn just came live. This website
could make visitors think of Google localised service, but there is no
connection between Google and the local one. The owner of the website
claims that he is a fan of Google and created for other fans without
Google's permission. It is so easy to order an Ajax desktop StartPage
package with less than 500$ from commercial software providers. Why
bother use Google's proprietary brand names to face legal actions of
copyrights infringement?

Facebook Code Leaked and Social Networking Service Architect
Leak of much
hyped SNS Facebook codes is the
top digg these day. The guy revealed the secrets
suddenly became a must watch in the blogosphere. What can you do with
the codes: to know more about what behind the brilliant features of FB?
Find the reasons why FB is so successful? Copy these to make your clone
better?...If you plan a SNS put those FB codes away even you have whole
source codes. Mark Zuckerberg
is truly a Social Networking Service Architect not just merely a coder.
Start by targeting your defined folks, design your own SNS blueprint
with centric user experience. Find out how members interact/connect with
others is more important than how pretty lines of codes. Since you show
your architect talent, you would be a hot boy in the town for tag team
partners and investors.

iShare - Indian Model Can Work in Vietnam
The leading India
portal Rediff have launched iShare, a
multimedia sharing site = YouTube + Flickr + Last.fm. This combination
model seems fit into the large portal's expansion roadmap. Some online
service companies in Vietnam are busy building big data centers and why
not an option for the iShare equivalent. Instead of single service of
sharing only video/music/photo, they can utilize the DC for the all in
one services. FPT
Online is quietly testing the file sharing Xiklo and rumors on
Vinagame's music sharing/social networking services arise, who could be
the next to make the iShare.portal.vn

Who Will Run Audition 2
Audition is a
top hit dance MMO game with millions of teen users across Vietnam.
Created by Korea's T3
Entertainment and operated by VTC Game
Online, Audition came to Vietnam mid 2006 and instantly captured the
heart and mind of teen girls hungering for online social entertainment.
The success made other game service providers GSPs seeking similar
titles after failure at launching fighting MMORPG (Swordsman Online
excluded, another success story). Bad
news for VTC from China: LineKong, an IDGVC backed game
company has licensed Audition 2 from T3 Entertainment. LineKong founders
are from Kingsoft that IDGVV brought Swordman Online to
Vietnam then operated by IDGVV
backed Vinagame. Unlike China
scene, IDGVV will not have to look for new startup team since Vinagame is the largest on line
GSP now. Can VTC release its in-house developed Audition 2
clone?

UGC and USC
Many user
generated content UGC services now attract million visits daily, this
lead to booming of media sharing sites in China and Vietnam could follow
soon. But copyright infringement is big headache for these services.
Look into Vietnam YouTube clone clip.vn , almost users record video clips
from TV channels and rip from pirated DVDs, drop by yeuamnhac.com international music
tracks are being used without copyrights. If business model is
advertising based, how big advertisers and ad agencies put their sweet
brands along with pirated content. These are not truly UGC services
rather a user submitted content USC. Self recording of video clips is
not a habit of Vietnamese users now. An option of USC is to follow Digg. It is mutual benefit for both USC
services and original content owners (OCO). If users are interested in
the stories they would track to the original and both service get
traffic increase. Many OCO embed Digg buttons to promote their services
and advertisers are happy to put ads on these rights clear
services.

YouTube Clones! Check China
Via IHT.com
. China' YouTube clones are at
crossroads since facing gaps between large inventory of video content
and low ad revenues.
"A very important success factor for video-sharing services in China is the magnitude in penetrating video sharing into other Web 2.0 services like blogging, social networking or social bookmarking," said Andy Fan, chief executive of Mofile.com.
Established Web companies like Tom Online, SINA, Sohu.com and Netease.com, which market watchers believe are considering expansion into video sharing, have a bigger chance of success in the online video business, as they already command a high level of traffic and have deeper pockets, analysts said.Looking into Vietnam market, leading ISPs or ICPs with large server farms such as VDC, FPT, Viettel, VASC, Vinagame have big advantages over new players.
"If video-sharing sites rely on their own resources and capabilities, I don't see much prospect for profit," said Liu Bin, chief analyst at the Beijing research firm BDA China.

How Much to Clone YouTube
Following the first
Vietnamese YouTube clone,
others would be launched soon. How about the cost, based on my initial
estimate* for the site of 1/10th of size of YouTube (as in February
2007) the workout is as follows:
Grid-computing costs for 1 year = $4,000.00
Storage costs for 1 year = $15,000.00
Bandwidth costs for 1 year = $40,000.00
Development cost = $30,000.00
Maintenance cost = $12,000.00
Editorial team = $25,000.00
Grand Total = $126,000.00
It is minimum cost for year one, so what is your revenue model? When and how you clone exit?
* Estimate used Vormiteer calculation (built with Rails).
* YouTube bandwidth costs could reach $1 million a month according to Forbes
