The attraction of portal model is that it can attract a good stream of
display ad revenues throughout its content property. You would be
surprised if you knew how much CPM Yahoo is charging for position on its
portal property (IP targeting Vietnam) while their Yahoo.com.vn is out
of sync with Vietnamese users.
While I do agree with your excellent insight that Zing, Gate and
Timnhanh portals' future are dim, it is because of their poor execution
not less of the beauty of portal business model. Yahoo is so yesteryear,
but they are still No. 4 online player behind Google, Ebay and recently
resurging Amazon.
Therefore, the game is in play for anyone who can duplicate Yahoo model
in Vietnam with a deep understanding of Vietnamese consumers' insights
and a relentless focus on user experience rather than the look and feel
of a business model on their home page.
While search ads in Vietnam, despite the flock of Baamboo, 7sac, Socbay,
Uizaa, Vinaseek and the likes, remain an unseen future, display ads are
now the king of Vietnam's internet ads industry. Check out with
MindShare or New Media to see if I'm wrong.
great insights, thank you so much Jason and HarryD.
Do you see any key reasons why such portals are not succesful (yet)? I
always wonder about that, especially Yobanbe just died.
I think everyone is trying be the "1st mover" position and
copying US business models. The people that do use the internet in
Vietnam are tech savvy and they will have an eye out for quality.
Being able to monetize these websites is hard enough in the US and it
will be even tougher here.
