A team in Vietnam National University is developing a general search
engine namely "VNUH Nutch". The search engine is mainly based
on an open source package Nutch (http://lucene.apache.org/nutch/) and
targets to be a "Vietnamese Baidu". The search engine is now
in developing and running at http://203.113.130.205:8180/nutchSIS/en/.
The outstanding features of this search engine, as the team said, will
be Vietnamese language processing with data mining and "natural
language processing" techniques. The features are hopefully better
than Yahoo and Google!!
My opinion is that a new general search engine even with local language
processing features is hardly competitive with Google or Yahoo. Perhaps
limited area of search is the way to go such as properties search, music
search etc.
How do you think?
Thanks for your information. They think the features better than Google
but what users think is different. Vertical search could be good option.
Hi there: For some reasons I can't access the search site "VNUH
Hutch" you mentioned. Is it just me or the site is down?
While a good product is perhaps the most important requirement for
success, the company needs to bring it to the mass, which requires money
and marketing.
Hi Khoa, the site still worked few days ago. It is not working for me
either. Perhaps it is temporarily down.
Hi Jason: It's true that the Vietnamese language is simpler than other
stroke-style languages. Vertical search might be a great way to
establish footprint. For example: in Korea, Naver first used its Q&A
service to attract users before they moved into search service.
